Through blurred eyes...
Last night, less than 24 hours before she was to leave Iraq, Connor was hunted down and euthanized.

I'm so sorry, baby girl. We tried to give you the best life we could...
You were more than just a dog.

Much love from Jeff and Sara.

To everyone who gave money and offered support, thank you so much. I wish things were different.

[Editor's Note: Here's something Jeff wrote; partly to send into The Void and partly to share with you]

I'll Miss You

We found you at six weeks old. Not much more than five pounds, you lived on potted meat and long life milk. It was all we had. You grew into a little puppy, an Iraqi dog with an Irish name from Boon Dock Saints. For all the times you ran away, dug holes incessantly, pissed and puked all over my bed, you ran to me as fast as you could when I whistled for you. It was those times that I loved you the most. I’m sure you’re with my friends and brother in Heaven and you’re yelping and whining to come down from your cloud. Someday Connor, someday I’ll play with you again. Good-bye…. I hope you remember me when you hear me whistling.

I'm wondering why they created this policy. Were dogs barking and attracting insurgents? Were they playing fetch and accidentally bringing home IEDs instead of their stick? Does Rumsfeld just hate puppies?

No, no, and possibly.

In this case, some moron was probably hitting one with a stick, and he got bitten. They made a general order to put them all down.

Oh my god
Sara, I am devastated. I was so excited for her to become part of our family and can only imagine how you are feeling. Do you know where Jeff is and if his email is up?

Re: Oh my god
His e-mail is up, he's a bit of a mess right now... I posted here 'cause this is where I go to release, and he wrote that quote for this. He's not really doin' so hot right now. :/ But, I don't think he's at the computer at the moment either way.

Can you email me at itsacountry @ livejournal.com?

I can only imagine how you guys must be doing...Jeff looked like crap...I feel horrible and helpless from afar.

Re: Oh my god
I think so, but it seems to be working ok now.

Waitaminute. You're in IRAQ, one of the most dangerous places on earth, surrounded by guys with RPGs and they're worried about getting bitten by MASCOTS? Yeesh.

While you're at it better watch out around the Bradleys - I hear they have pointy corners.
セラ・カスタインitsacountry on January 17th, 2005 05:27 am (UTC)
Shhhh you'll make them release a new Safety Standown message.

Now you realize the inanity of the system.

I've been hearing that the Armed Forces are so concerned about high casualty rates eroding public support that they're not letting soldiers take enough risks to do their jobs the way they want to. I have no idea whether that's true or not (it might just be another way to blame war opponents when things go bad) but if "the way they want to" means "with cute mascots" this would certainly be an example. "Sorry we can't let you have a mascot, he might bite someone and the injury would be on the news and then people would say OMG INJURED SOLDIERS VIETNAM."

Exactly what I was thinking.

I read another journal where some team's mascot was a chicken. (Someone bought it for food and then decided not to eat it.) Would this policy apply to *all* animals or just the bitey ones?
dot dot dotagentelrond on January 17th, 2005 02:48 pm (UTC)
Chickens could peck at you! Kill 'em!
